Overview

SUMMARY:   As a member of the Distribution Lead Team, the Transportation Director ensures Wausau Supply Company’s fleet of vehicles and common carrier use are married together as a key component to providing outstanding customer servicing at the lowest cost and best value to customers we serve.  The Transportation Director oversees all company vehicles including commercial licensed vehicles regulated by the DOT, vehicles supporting operations, company passenger vehicles, sales support/service vehicles, operations lift trucks and other specialty vehicles with all company and regulated authorities’ specific requirements. The Transportation Director will own all programs and technology to include Driver Safety, Fleet Management, Driver Recruiting and Training Programs, ELDs, and Transportation Management System.  The Transportation Director will directly manage the company fleet domiciled at company locations, maintains and establish processes/procedures, source and assure cost effective ownership and manage the life cycle of each vehicle in partnership with management of each company location

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: (not limited to)

  • Manages all company-owned, leased or short-term rental vehicles through their effective life meeting the needs of their users, as well as coordinates disposal of assets in partnership with internal stakeholders, finance and Distribution management.
  • Ensures each vehicle adheres to industry standards and regulations for emissions, usage and operation.
  • Tracks the effectiveness and use of each piece of equipment and considers options for next generation refinement to specifications.
  • Maintains an awareness and enforces compliance for vehicle non-conformance and damage. Manages accident reporting, damage claims, repair-replace best practices. Audits vendor billing for accuracy and handles exceptions as needed.
  • Manages a system of vehicle auditing to assure compliance and maintenance.
  • Identifies, manages and recommends changes to corporate fuel purchase programs.
  • Maintains a system or record keeping and manages the operations teams’ ownership of executing maintenance for company vehicles. Develops practices and makes changes to fleet plans to reduce the cost of ownership over the life of the company’s fleet.
  • Manages licensing, permits and all required documentation for the vehicles to operate and comply to DOT, state and other applicable regulations. 
  • Manages overall corporate responsibility as a carrier regarding ALL FMCSA and the Department of Transportation.
    • FMCSA compliance to driver records, on boarding, drug and alcohol testing fleet record keeping.
    • DOT compliance – Driver Training and Safety Programs, Electronic Log compliance, fleet record keeping.
  • Uses and stays current regarding industry knowledge in conjunction with developing specifications for fleet assets based on business requirements, company feedback, and financial guidance. Forecasts vehicle needs for each intended function. Recommends vehicle purchases, leases and rentals when adding or replacing vehicles in the company’s fleet.
  • Identifies and recommends strategies to reduce equipment and vehicle costs. Reports performance vs. metric specific to but not limited to the following: fleet productivity, cost of ownership, vehicle specification performance, compliance, and additional fleet specific metrics. Uses data to support decisions and recommendations. Evaluates best in industry practices as basis of recommendations or decision making to contribute to achieving corporate financial goals and initiatives.
  • Owns and administers the Transportation Management System as well as any associated systems
  • Collaborates with distribution department senior management by preparing annual fleet budget as part of overall plan to support company fleet needs, growth and management of the fleet through assets’ life cycle of ownership.

Qualifications

A TRANSPORTATION DIRECTOR WILL POSSESS AND DEMONSTRATE:

Education / Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in business, Logistics, or a related field or 7-10 years of Fleet Management and Common Carrier Contract Management.
  • 5 years of demonstrated technical capability with Routing and Transportation Management Software.
  • $20M minimum of previous transportation budget ownership.
  • Successful leadership of direct reports
  • Experience working with fleet operations software.
  • Advanced software experience using Outlook, Excel, Word, SharePoint.
  • Experience using business intelligence software and analyzing data to reach conclusions.

 

Working Demands / Physical Requirements:

  • Complete work at a desk sitting or standing using a PC.
  • Ability to stand/bend/walk for long periods of time.
  • Ability to drive or fly for long periods of time.
  • Travel as needed up to 10%.
